Helpful Tips in writing a letter:
+ Take your time as you write to make sure it is clear and concise.
+ Letters should be 200 words or less.
+ Include your correct contact information; the paper will likely verify your identity.
+ Identify a specific issue that is important to you: Public Education, College affordability, the Opiate Epidemic, Poverty, Housing.
+ Tell a personal story about it.
+ Sometimes one or two statistics can help.
+ Great public services strengthen our communities, but we need the revenue to pay for those services. After more than a decade of tax cuts, it is time for Ohio to try a new strategy.
+ Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Contact us at Nick@OneOhioNow.org if you want help.
Tips for your LTE about the federal tax cuts:
– This is another tax cut for the wealthy – it won’t work.
– Ohio needs investments – not cuts – in vital programs and services.
Over 10 years:
+ The Senate proposal is a tax shift – raising taxes on those who make less than $75,000 to cut tax taxes for the wealthy.
+ 13 million people will lose health insurance.
+ Only 140 estates in Ohio will be impacted by the elimination of the estate tax.
+ Proposal will cost Ohio more than 80,000 units of affordable rental housing.
+ Bill is more expensive than originally thought – increasing deficit by $1.9 trillion over 10 years.
+ Ohio has major problems – opiates, infant mortality, high college tuition, stagnant wages – and these tax cuts will not address these issues. Instead of a tax cut, we should put this level of urgency on solving problems.
My wife and I are both school teachers. I teach at the Small Town High School and she teaches 8th grade English at Nearby Middle School. We both have hard working and dedicated students and they just need the same opportunities offered to students in wealthy school districts. Sadly, both of our school districts have reduced staff, implemented pay-to-play fees, and more to cut costs since the recession. Cuts to the arts, AP courses, athletics, clubs, and other educational opportunities hurt our students. The proposed federal tax cuts will hurt our schools and the students even more. We do not have many millionaires who will benefit from these tax cuts, but we will all feel the sting of billions of dollars cut from education, nutrition, and other programs that strengthen our entire community. I encourage our Congressional leaders to oppose these tax cuts, because they will not benefit the majority of Ohioans.
I live in Anytown, Ohio and I oppose the proposed federal tax cuts that will primarily benefit the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the rest of us. We need more investments into job training, nutrition assistance, and education, not less. Ohio continues to trail the nation in wages and has higher rates of infant mortality, hunger, and poverty than the nation as a whole. We know that we can do better, but we cannot do better alone. We need smart public investments that will strengthen our communities. The proposed federal tax cuts will shift taxes from the wealthy to the rest of us and undermine public investments in nutrition programs, education, and safe roads and bridges. To build a strong economy we need public investments into our workforce and rebuilding our infrastructure across this nation. I encourage our Senators and Congressional leaders to oppose more tax cuts for the wealthy.
